Large ad. Memory Diamonds Ltd incorporated under Companies Act by letters patent June 10, 1953 as a private company and converted into a public company by supplementary letters patent April 23, 1954. Head office 26 Bank of Toronto Building, Fort William ON. Mr Larry M.M. Baarts was born in Holland, and as a boy was interested in and participated in the sports activities most boys his age fancy. Enjoyed soccer football, skiing and skating. He came from a family of five boys, one of whom is associated with the diamond enterprise. Came to Canada in 1926 and soon afterwards became engaged in the newsprint making industry where his career climbed to that of research chemist, supt and manager of a mill. He was with the International Paper Co. of Timiskiaming QU and then with the Abitibi Power and Paper Co. at Iroquois Falls ON and finally at FW with the same company since 1937. Coming to the Lakehead 17 years ago, as supt at the Mission Mill of Abitibi, he also managed the mill at Nipigon for the Lake Sulphite and then in 1942, after 14 years with the paper company, he went into business for himself. He own the St Louis Hotel in FW and is president of the Lakehead Hotelkeepers Association. ... Mr Baarts first began importing diamonds in 1945, and in 1946 as a result of his connection with firm of D. Drukker and Son of Amsterdam, one of the largest diamond firms in Europe, he was given the franchise for imports into Canada for industrial and polished diamonds. Diamond used by the company are primarily mined in South Africa and reach FW via Amsterdam Holland. They are graded in Europe and rechecked on their arrival here and weighed to within half a point. | |||

Mr Lawrence Larry Baarts, age 77 years, of 219 W. Ridgeway Street, died in hospital on February 6, 1982. Born in Maastricht Holland he immigrated to Canada in 1926 working as a paper mill chemist in Temiscaming, then moving to Fort William in 1937 becoming superintendent of the Abitibi Mission Mill and manager of the Red Rock mill. Active in mining and prospecting in the local area, he was also very active in municipal politics, serving as alderman and chairman of finances for many years. He was also president of the Concerned Citizens Association. A hotel keeper for many years, he was a past president of 25 years of the local Hotel Keepers Association, a member of the Ontario Hotel Keepers Association, a Elks Lodge 82, Prospectors Association, president of Memory Diamonds Ltd, Memory Lodge and Tenacity Mines. Survived by wife Ann, daughter Maryann, at home; son Ernie of Thunder Bay and 1 grandchild; brothers John and Jeff in Holland as well as other relatives survive. Predeceased by parents and brother Willy in Holland. Funeral Wednesday Blake Funeral Chapel to St Patrick's Cathedral. Burial Mountain View cemetery.
